The Church of the Redeemer in Morristown celebrated the start of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month with a “Pride Sunday” service.
Redeemer members Cindy Meneghin and Maureen Kilian spoke of their 40-year journey as a lesbian couple at the Adult Forum and again during the worship service.

Some of you may already know this, but I wanted to be sure to reach as many people as possible. My husband Mike and I, after many years of discussion and considered thought and prayer, have decided to spend our retirement years in Philadelphia. Born and raised city folk, we have missed having city life right outside our door all these years in the suburbs. Since we attended grad school in Philly and loved it back then, it seemed a no-brainer to return. Singer Christine DeLeon, Yankees organist Ed Alstrom and the Metropolitan Sax Quintet are among the headliners scheduled for RedeemerFest, a series of free concerts and events at Morristown’s Episcopal Church of the Redeemer from June 6-15, 2014.
“It showcases our ‘big tent’ approach to church in, of all things, a big tent!” Rector Cynthia Black said in a statement.

There were two things that reminded me of our place in history this week. One was rather obvious– the privilege and opportunity to host the Rt. Rev. Barbara Harris for Women’s Journeys Day. During her sermon she led us into the gospel of John and the role of the various Marys in Jesus’ life. During the Adult Forum she shared stories (with her characteristic dry wit and ever-so-slightly in-your-face humor) about the ups and downs of the life of the first woman bishop. It was a great honor to have her with us. She will be 84 in June and is still going strong! Read more →
The news became public earlier this week that Bishop Gene Robinson and his husband, Mark Andrew, are getting divorced. As you might imagine the conservatives have had a field day with it. Gene has written about the decision to get divorced with his characteristic grace in a column in the Daily Beast. Reading it, I reflected on both the importance of my marriage to me and the reason why we need to stop referring to marriages between people of the same sex as “gay marriage.” Read more →
Our church is even more impressive then usual right now. Not only because it is well adorned but because much of that festal décor comes from our neighborhoods. Carefully arranged daffodils on the side altar, fountains of forsythia around the font, and budding cherry blossoms at the altar were in our yards before they joined the lilies in our buildings. It seems like the very rotation of the planet is colluding with the liturgy to present our sacred story.
