What to do?

February 24, 2017
24 Feb 2017

Never have I been so perplexed, nor waited so long to decide what to do for a Lenten program. For months I thought I knew what we would be doing for our Wednesday evening program. Then the election happened. Why should that matter, you might wonder? Now it seems that so much of our conversation gets viewed through the lens of “What’s happening in Washington” or the latest CNN News Alert to pop up on our phone. So it seemed this year that it was important to return to our roots– to consider the most basic premises that underlie any outward manifestations of our faith right now. Read more →

A lifeline to survival…

February 9, 2017
09 Feb 2017

This past Sunday we heard from Matthew’s gospel about being the “Salt of the earth” and the “Light of the world.” Salt in the first century, because of its use as a food preservative, was a real lifeline to survival–having it and using it could be a matter of life or death. Our faith is like that, too, and it seems that these days we are getting a lot of opportunities to put our faith into action. Because of this, and because as a community we have a variety of interests when it comes to staying abreast of what is happening today, we have instituted a “Faith in Action” table in the back of the church– a place to share information and to network, and a “Faith in Action” corner of the e-Pistle, our newsletter. We are looking for a “curator” of the table. Interested? Let Cynthia know. Read more →

Praying with my feet…

January 26, 2017
26 Jan 2017

When the 1979 Book of Common Prayer first came out (or when I became conscious of it, anyway, having grown up with the “Green Book” and the “Zebra Book” before it) I memorized the page numbers of the Baptismal Covenant. It spoke to me and my spiritual journey. It later came in handy when I could refer to it on my ordination exams, and it was useful last week when a reporter asked me why I was going to Washington to participate in the Women’s March. To “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being” is what I have been trying to do all of my life, and marching–praying with one’s feet– is one way to do that. How do we measure a year?

December 23, 2016
23 Dec 2016

How do we measure a year? By its global triumphs? Its tragedies? The number of quiet moments we were able to make for ourselves or others? Our personal triumphs and tragedies? Read more →

Family fun

December 1, 2016
01 Dec 2016

Enjoy these images of our Thanksgiving feast and the annual “Count Day” at Serendipity Stitchers, wherein the hundreds of scarves and hats they knit are tallied and presented to CSK staff. This year Kay did a demonstration of the new reflective yarn that is knit into many of the hats. Clicking on any image will enlarge it.

An early Thanksgiving

November 23, 2016
23 Nov 2016

Last night an amazing amalgam of humanity gathered under our roof to express our fears, build alliances of hope and to stand together in love. We enjoyed amazing music, and heard both uplifting words of encouragement and raw and painful stories of truth. We were not all of one political mind, and that, frankly, made the evening that much better. What we could agree on was the importance of respecting the dignity of every human being. That, for me, was the best way to start Thanksgiving. (Respecting the dignity of every human being also just happens to be something we promise to do every time we baptize someone.) Once again, it was greater Morristown at its best, and Redeemer at its best. That so many people could pull together so quickly to do something like this was amazing! Thank you to all who helped– Peg, Terri, Diann, Colleen, Becky, Joan, Maurice, Sandra, Jody, Dave, Anne Matlack and Harmonium, Mark Miller, and Susanna Cates and the Morris Area Clergy Council.

I opened my big fat mouth…

November 18, 2016
18 Nov 2016

…and before I knew it, we were hosting the community-wide vigil to “Stand on the Side of Love.” It was originally going to be at St. Margaret’s– a fitting choice, given the extreme level of fear being experienced in the immigrant community at this time. But in the end, a scheduling conflict prevented the service from being held there, and we were the next logical choice. Of course I said yes! Read more →

Bearing witness to love…

November 10, 2016
10 Nov 2016

On the day after the election we gathered to pray and to listen to each other and to express a range of emotions. We lit candles for all who are feeling vulnerable, for all living with fear, and for all trying to understand what the outcome of our election might mean. With little notice a large number of people came, brought food, prayed, ate, listened, talked and were community for each other in our pain and bewilderment. Read more →
