February 3, 2014
03 Feb 2014

Pretty soon, visitors to Morristown’s Episcopal Church of the Redeemer may be recharging their cars along with their souls.

A free charging station for electric vehicles–believed to be the first in town–is coming to the church driveway within a few weeks, said the Rev. Cynthia Black, the church’s rector.

In the News: Morristown Church Mounts Quadruple Wedding

November 28, 2013
28 Nov 2013

On Sunday the Church of the Redeemer will celebrate and bless the marriage of four couples from the congregation that are all gay or lesbian. Another gay couple will have their civil marriage blessed and many, both gay and straight, will renew their vows. In addition, there will be a prayer for members who were in long-term relationships, whose spouses have died.

“This will be an opportunity for us to celebrate, not only with our gay and lesbian couples, but with all the members of the Redeemer community, the hundreds and hundreds of years of commitment that our members have made to their spouses,” said the Rev. Cynthia L. Black, rector of Redeemer.

In the News: Gay marriage: Morristown church plans group wedding for dozens of couples

October 22, 2013
22 Oct 2013

“Technically,” the Episcopal Church doesn’t condone same-sex marriage, the Rev. Cynthia Black said.

She corrected herself. Not “technically.” That wasn’t quite the right word.

“Canonically, by Canon law, we are required to follow the rules of the church,” Black, who serves at Christ the Redeemer in Morristown, said. “And we can not act independently of those rules. But there is, I think it’s safe to say, there’s some small amount of discretion.”

Tips for Creating a Greener Home

March 14, 2013
14 Mar 2013

Cleaning Products
Many cleaning products contain chemicals that are bad for your health and the environment, and have not been adequately tested for their harmful effects. You can, however, make your own green cleaners. Follow this simple recipe for an all-purpose cleaner: 4 cups warm water, 2 tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 2 tablespoons of natural liquid soap (such as Dr.Bronnor’s orange scented), and 10 drops of essential oil (Lavender, Pine or Tea Tree–the oil is optional, but helps disinfect and adds a pleasant fragrance). Mix water, vinegar, and baking soda first, then add the soap and essential oil.

Seal and Insulate
The average U.S. home has enough air leaks to equal an open window. Sealing and insulating your home can save you up to 20% on heating and cooling costs, and upwards of 10% on your total energy bill Find an experienced certified contractor, or follow Energy Star’s do-it-yourself guide to sealing and insulating using the following link.

Light Bulbs
If every U.S. household replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an Energy Star-rated compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), it would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. A CFL uses one-fourth the energy of an incandescent light bulb and will pay for itself within 6 months. You can start small by installing Energy Star-rated CFLs when a light blows out, or make a big change by installing CFLs in all of your lights.

Thermostats
As much as half of the energy used in your home goes towards heating and cooling. Start saving money and energy immediately by adjusting your thermostat. In winter, be sure to lower the thermostat by at least 10 degrees when you are not at home or are sleeping. It’s vice-versa for summer.

February 21, 2013
21 Feb 2013

Emancipation “is in our DNA” at Church of the Redeemer  in Morristown, New Jersey, says the Rev. Cynthia Black, rector. “We talk about liberation. We live liberation.”

So when it came time to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the church that calls itself “a Christian liberation community in the Episcopal tradition” planned far more than a one-day or Black History Month event.

In the News: Calls from pulpit to join protest against gun violence

February 11, 2013
11 Feb 2013

“My prayer on Feb. 14 is that we’ll show some real love, and it won’t be one race, or one this or one that, but we’ll come together and remember the senseless violence [against] every child,” preached Pastor Sidney Williams Jr. of Bethel A.M.E. Church.

The pastor recounted a predominantly black Morristown rally condemning the Florida shooting of Trayvon Martin, and a largely white service mourning the suicide of Morristown High School freshman Lennon Baldwin.
