In the News: Bible stories come to life in new way

Worship services at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Morristown are getting a dramatic facelift — with emphasis on the dramatic.

Drawing on its long tradition of regularly hearing members share stories of their life journeys from the pulpit, Redeemer has created a Season of Sacred Story. From Aug. 5 though Sept. 30, services are featuring the dramatic storytelling of members’ favorite Bible stories each Sunday.

In the News: Soup Kitchen Celebrating 10,000 Straight Days

It takes a little over 27 years, along with a mountain of dedication and support, to reach 10,000 consecutive days of service. On April 18th the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center will mark this impressive milestone with a party in the dining room for the guests.

Much has changed in Morristown and at the Community Soup Kitchen over the years, but the primary mission has remained the same. Since its inception, the Soup Kitchen has been committed to providing nutritious meals in a warm, safe, and caring environment, free of charge, no questions asked to anyone who comes seeking nourishment.

In the News: Redeemer Invites People to Shred for Lent

Newly installed on front lawn is the Lenten Shredding Project, an interactive art installation just in time for Lent. The project invites members of the Morristown community to a time of reflection, whether or not they observe Lent.

“Lent is a time to look at that which separates us from a deeper experience of the ‘holy’ in our life,” said the Rev. Cynthia Black, rector of Church of the Redeemer. “Using the contemporary symbol of a shredder, we can release that which keeps us from being all that God has called us to be.”

In the News: Redeemer Committing to ‘Green’ Initiative

It might not be easy being green, but , on South Street, is still willing to put in the time it will take to become certified by GreenFaith over the next two years.

Church of the Redeemer, located on South Street just one block away from the historic Green in Morristown, NJ, is launching a major environmental initiative to “Go Green” by participating in a rigorous two-year environmental certification program sponsored by GreenFaith, a national interfaith environmental organization.

In the News: Retired Ugandan bishop tells Morristown congregation how he risked all for gay rights

Retired Anglican Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, who has risked his own life and that of his family as an advocate for gay-, lesbian- and transgender rights, shared his experiences and beliefs at the Adult Forum at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Morristown on Sunday.

In 2007, Senyonjo was relieved of his duties as a bishop in Uganda. “They never formally put me out of the church, but simply took away my duties,” he said.

In the News: Concert at Redeemer in Morristown raises $1,200 for SAFE

A Sunday benefit concert by pop duo Jason and deMarco at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Morristown raised just over $1,200 for SAFE (Safe Affirming Family Environment), a Houston-based service organization helping foster children and young adults find jobs and transition to independent living.

Among other initiatives, SAFE runs a Safe House Program to help gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender young adults older than 18 who are displaced or need housing, and to aid younger GLBT or questioning youth in the foster-care system.

In the News: Video: New Rector at Redeemer

In a liturgy celebrating its inclusive theology and worship style, its commitment to justice and its connections to the Morristown community and the wider Episcopal Church, the Church of the Redeemer on South Street officially installed its 16th rector on Thursday, Sept. 29.

Community leaders, including Mayor Tim Dougherty and Pastor Sidney Williams of the Bethel AME Church, and laity and clergy from throughout the Diocese of Newark and beyond joined Redeemer members in welcoming the Rev. Cynthia Black.
