Since 1991 the Church of the Redeemer, at 36 South St., Morristown, has been offering Commitment Services, and beginning in 2007, Civil Unions, for its gay and lesbian couples. That’s all about to change.

“We anticipate that in the very near future, we will finally be able to say to our gay and lesbian members, “The State of New Jersey has finally caught up with Redeemer,” said the Rev. Cynthia Black, rector of Church of the Redeemer in Morristown.

“My prayer on Feb. 14 is that we’ll show some real love, and it won’t be one race, or one this or one that, but we’ll come together and remember the senseless violence [against] every child,” preached Pastor Sidney Williams Jr. of Bethel A.M.E. Church.

The pastor recounted a predominantly black Morristown rally condemning the Florida shooting of Trayvon Martin, and a largely white service mourning the suicide of Morristown High School freshman Lennon Baldwin.

Worship services at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Morristown are getting a dramatic facelift — with emphasis on the dramatic.

Drawing on its long tradition of regularly hearing members share stories of their life journeys from the pulpit, Redeemer has created a Season of Sacred Story. From Aug. 5 though Sept. 30, services are featuring the dramatic storytelling of members’ favorite Bible stories each Sunday.

It takes a little over 27 years, along with a mountain of dedication and support, to reach 10,000 consecutive days of service. On April 18th the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center will mark this impressive milestone with a party in the dining room for the guests.

Much has changed in Morristown and at the Community Soup Kitchen over the years, but the primary mission has remained the same.
